Kaifeng is a city located on the southern bank of the Yellow River in northern Henan province. The city was the capital of China during several dynasties, and was visited by Marco Polo. Around 1,000 years ago, when it was the capital of the Song dynasty, Kaifeng was the most prosperous and busy city in China, even in the world. Countless expats immigrated right here and lived their whole lives, especially the arabian muslims and persians, who afterwards formed a totally new ethnic group in China, named Hui Also, the jews settled down in Kaifeng, carried on their generations, and became a part of Chinese ethnic under the patronage of the contemporary emperor. Nowadays, one of the 17 big jewish families still remains in Bible Hutong (Jiaojing Hutong, visited and [reported] by lots of jewish individuals and groups from israel. The local Henan University is also an important acadamy on Chinese jews issues. The city today has well-developed commerce, transport, communications and educational facilities, and medical and public health services. The Yellow River that flooded its banks and wrought havoc for a thousand years has been harnessed. The Liuyuan Ferry at Kaifeng is now open to tourists as a scenic. Repeated Yellow River floods, however, caused damage to the ancient capital of Kaifeng through the years. Many of its historical relics were destroyed. Among those that have survived are the "Iron" Pagoda, Pota Pagoda, Dragon Pavilion, Xiangguo Monastery, King Yu's Terrace and Yanqing Taoist Temple. These are all fine works of architecture. Their majestic beauty bears testimony to the wisdom and the cultural and artistic standards their creators attained.
