urano is a city located in Kamikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 24,735 and a density of 41.2 persons per km². The total area is 600.97 km². The city was founded on 1 May 1966. The city is known for its lavender fields and other natural produce. However, in recent times it has become a popular winter holiday destination because of its ski slopes. The town itself is split by the Sorachi river into two areas. The main commercial area of Furano is located on the east side of the river, while the Kitanomine ski area lies on the west. Famous for its lavender fields, delicious melons, excellent skiing and the late-July Heso Matsuri (; Navel Festival). If you've been pining for a place where you can strip off your shirt and have a scary traditional mask painted onto your torso before you go revelling, you've come to the right festival. Tobiiri odori (‘jump right in' dancing is part of the fun; as with sumō, it helps to be heavy. In case you're scratching your head trying to figure out the connection between this town and belly buttons, it's because Furano is in the geographical centre of Hokkaidō: the middle.
