Miyazaki is the capital city of Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyûshû in Japan. The city was founded on April 1, 1924. On January 1, 2006 the towns of Tano, Sadowara, and Takaoka merged into the city. As of this merger but with 2003 population estimates, the city had an estimated population of 365,311 and a density of 612 persons per km². The total area is 596.68 km². Miyazaki Airport serves the city. It is a sister city to Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. In 1940, the Shôwa regime constructed on the legendary site of Emperor Jimmu's palace, near Miyazaki, the Hakkô Pillar, symbolizing the divine right of the Empire of Japan to "unify the eight corners of the world". The tower survived the war and apparently can still be visited. A planned merger of municipalities will be implemented on March 23, 2010. Kiyotake, Miyazaki District will merge into Miyazaki. Miyazaki District will cease to exist.
