Tioman Island has for a long time been the clandestine haunt of divers eager to explore the beautiful coral, but now boasts superb facilities and quality accommodation.Easily accessible from both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, this is the largest and one of the most impressive of the east coast islands, its main attractions being the beautiful white-sand beaches and the fabulous snorkelling and diving. There is also fascinating flora and fauna on Tioman, and nature lovers will find the rugged trails of the mountainous interior worth exploring.
The permanent population of Tioman is small and only one main road exists. As such, much transport around the island is by boat but Tioman is well geared up for visitors and dive courses are readily available.Tioman (Malay: Pulau Tioman) is a small island, 39 km long and 12 km wide, located off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Tioman's beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie South Pacific as "Bali Hai". In the 1970s, Time magazine selected Tioman as one of the world's most beautiful islands. The densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, but is surrounded by numerous white coral reefs, making it a haven for scuba divers from around the region. Already the most developed of Malaysia's eastern islands, a controversial RM 40 million marina project for Kampung Tekek, complete with 175-meter cargo jetty, now threatens to speed up the pace of development on Tioman considerably - so get there before it's too late! Pulau Tioman is one of the most beautiful islands of Malaysia. It is located on the eastern side of the Malaysian peninsular. It has been regarded as a jewel in the sea. One early Malaysian legend claims Tioman to be a transformed dragon princess. Apparently the beautiful princess stopped enroute to Singapore from China to admire the charms of this spot. She was so pleased, so she decided to discontinue her journey, take the form of an island, and remain there as a place of shelter and comfort to passing travellers. The island is well-known for underwater adventure, snorkelling and windsurfing. From Mersing to Tioman, you can go either by speed boat (max passenger 20) or speed ferry (max passenger 150). Alternatively you can take a ferry from Singapore or Kuantan.
