Taoyuan City (traditional Chinese: pinyin: Táoyuán Shì; Wade-Giles: T ao-yüan) is the county seat of Taoyuan County in Taiwan, located in the northwestern part of the island. Taoyuan is the native home to the Plains tribes of Aborigines. Taoyuan s old name was (peach orchard) (POJ: Thô-á-hn̂g), since the area used to have many peach blossoms. In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed (peach garden street), and incorporated into the Hsinchu state as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was "Taoyuan County, Taoyuan Town". Since 1971, the name has remained Taoyuan City.
