Phrae Phrae Phrae Phrae

Phrae Province is in Northern Thailand. Phrae is the provincial capital of Phrae Province. An old and important community of Northern Thailand, Phrae was founded after Chiang Mai had been established as the capital of the Lanna Thai kingdom. With one of the largest reserves of teak forests in the country, it is on the banks of the Yom River, 555km from Bangkok. Covering an area about 6,538 square kilometres and surrounded on all sides by mountains with level plains in the middle. Like Chiang Mai and Lampang, Phrae has an old city partially surrounded by a moat beside a river (here it’s the Mae Nam Yom). Unlike Chiang Mai, Phrae’s old city still has lots of quiet lanes and old teak houses – if you’re a fan of traditional Thai teak architecture, you’ll find more of it here than in any other city of similar size anywhere in Thailand. The local temple architecture has successfully resisted central-Thai influence over the centuries as well. It’s a bit unusual: you’ll find a mix of Burmese, northern-Thai (Nan and Lanna) and Lao styles.Southeast of the old city, the newer, more modern Phrae looks like any other medium-sized town in Thailand.
