Brides les Bains is a commune in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. It was an Olympic Village for the 1992 Winter Games. It is a popular holiday destination for English tourists owing to its easy accessibility via Eurostar direct from London and its cable-car link direct to the ski slopes at Méribel, a major resort eight miles away.
Brides les Bains located beneath Meribel in the world's largest ski area, the Three Valleys, Brides-les-Bains is a spa town that provides a different type of winter holiday from the conventional stay on the mountain. The town was linked to Meribel by a high speed (but still 25 minutes), three stage gondola ahead of the 1992 Winter Olympics staged in the area, when it operated as the athlete's village.
The ski run back down is suitable to advanced skiers only and reliant on good snow cover right down to 600m for the full descent. Usually it is a case of taking the gondola up the mountain at the start of the day and returning by gondola at the end of the ski day.
The main benefits of staying in Brides les Bains include shorter airport transfers, typically lower prices for everything from accommodation to dining out in the valley compared to on the mountain, the chance to stay in a town that has a history pre-dating skiing and a indeed a life outside winter sports, with the spa culture still alive and well and a casino one of the alternatives.
Many of the old hotels retain their original facades from the Belle Epoque era and also offer far more space and better facilities as they are open year round, catering for up to 15.000 long stay guests in the summer spa season.
