Juan-les-Pins is located coast of the French Riviera between Nice and Cannes, and next to Antibes - the two resorts together are often referred to as simply Antibes-Juan-les-Pins. The Cap d'Antibes peninsula is home to many rich and famous people, hidden away in grand villas up the wooded hillside. The resort became popular in the early decades of the 20th century, and during the 1920's played host to many celebrities, Ernest Hemingway and Charlie Chaplin among them. The popularity continues to this day, and Juan-les-Pins is a very lively summer resort, with beach and sea related activities during the day giving way to the nightlife in the casino, clubs and bars - and in the streets - late into the night. The beach at Juan-les-Pins is large, sandy, and very popular. The town is also very well known for the jazz festival (Jazz ŕ Juan) held here during the last two weeks of July each year. Many famous jazz musicians have played here, and you can see their handprints preserved forever near the stage area. Historical note: it was at Golfe-Juan near Juan-les-Pins that Napoleon landed when returning from his exile to Elba prior to retaking control of the government - and his subsequent defeat at Waterloo. On the shore of the French Riviera… stood a large, proud, rose-coloured hotel. Deferential palms cooled its flushed facade and before it stretched a short dazzling beach. Now it has become a summer resort of notable and fashionable people…In the early morning the distant image of Cannes, the pink and cream of old fortifications, the purple Alp that bounded Italy, were cast across the water and lay quavering in the ripples and rings sent up by sea-plants through the clear shallows
