Rouffach is a city to be respectful of, not only because it is part of the Wine Route but also because there are still some ghosts residing there who will only make themselves apparent if silence is observed. Few people speak of Alsatian romanticism however it is in fact alive and can be encountered in a good many places. A strange and subtle Renaissance atmosphere is inadvertently recreated in Rouffach's streets when the church steeple and intricate gables can be made out in the moonlight silhouetted against the passing clouds. Rouffach is truly a delightful, charming city, full of souvenirs. And on the right night, if you're lucky, you may be able distinguish among the ghosts we mentioned earlier, those of the famous women of Rouffach, and that of Turenne who had the fortifications razed to the ground after having conquered Alsace, and that of marshal Lefebvre whose wife became famous, perhaps without realizing it, as "Madame Sans-Gene."
