Vannes acts as a gateway to the islands of the Golfe du Morbihan. It is a delightfully attractive town with a well preserved medieval centre, lively student population and small yacht-filled harbour.
Vannes' colourful past has left it teeming with art and history. It was once the capital of the Veneti, a Gallic seafaring tribe who built a wall to protect it which can still be seen today. The Veneti were defeated by the Romans who then established it further as a political and economic stronghold. The city retained its dominance until 1532 when Rennes became the Breton capital.
One has the impression that the inhabitants of Vannes are keen to preserve its riches. There are a variety of original parks and gardens earning Vannes numerous awards from various national flower institutions.
The beaches off the coast aren't bad either especially around Quiberon and Brittany's largest island, Belle-Ile-en-Mer which offers rugged cliffs, stunning rock formations and sheltered inland valleys.
The Gulfe du Morbihan is also a paradise for seafood & fish lovers with the local economy supported mainly by oyster production. Tourism is the other mainstay with the nearby prehistoric sites of Carnac and Gavrinis proving ever popular.
