Centrally located in the heart of Eastern wurttemberg/Germany, Aalen is the gateway to the Swabian Jurassic Geological region, and only one hour's drive from Baden-Wuerttemberg's state capital Stuttgart. In 150 A.D. the largest Roman cavalry fort north of the Alps was located here. The city's founding in 1240 by Staufer Emperor Frederic II, the declaration of the Imperial Town in 1360, the industrial development in the 19th century, the incorporations in the 1970s – these developments outline the growth of the city's metropolis with its 67,000 inhabitants and its seven suburbs. Work, quality lifestyle and recreation are tightly linked, which explains why people are happy living here.
Aalen, in the eastern part of Baden-wurttemberg and the heart of South Germany, is conveniently located for many transportation options. Whether travelling by train, car or plane – Aalen is an easy to reach destination.
Aalen is an important junction of the Deutsche Bahn public railway system. Trans-regional trains connect Aalen with Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Ulm and Munich. Aalen is also a stopping destination of the CityNightLine between Stuttgart and Dresden.
Aalen is very well connected to the national Autobahn system. Federal Highways B19 and B29 cross the Aalen city area.
There are two access routes from the Autobahn A7 - the major north-south axis in Germany: exits "Aalen/Westhausen" or "Aalen-Süd/Oberkochen".
Both the Autobahn intersections A7/A6 Feuchtwangen/Dinkelsbühl and A7/A8 Ulm/Elchingen are approximately a 30 minute drive from Aalen.
Stuttgart International Airport can conveniently be reached in about 90 minutes by car or train. The airport has a direct city railway connection with Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (Central Train Station) where hourly trains leave for Aalen.
