Aberfoyle may be a sleepy Stirlingshire village with a modest population of about 700, but it is regularly invaded by visitors looking to explore the Tolkien-esque scenery of the Trossachs. Less than an hour along the A81 from Glasgow, yet a million miles away from the bustle of the city, it is Aberfoyle that is considered the gateway to the lochs and forests of the Trossachs. The secret majesty of the area was revealed by Sir Walter Scott, whose 1810 poem, The Lady Of The Lake, featured the Lake Of Monteith, Scotland's only lake. The David Marshall Lodge is an essential port of call for those visiting the forests of the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. It arranges guided walks and issues permits for the nearby lochs, where there's excellent fishing for trout and pike. Boat hire is available for most lochs in the Trossachs. Forest Hills sports centre, Kinlochard, is a short drive from Aberfoyle and rents boats for fishing and sightseeing Loch Ard. And if you want some fun on dry land then the rather unlikely alliance of duck and sheepdog is on hand as the Quack Commandoes their words put on their unique display of sheepdogs herding Indian Runner Ducks. And who said The Scottish Sheepdog School didnot have a sense of humour
