Newcastle upon Tyne is often referred to as merely Newcastle. It is located in the north east of England with an approximate population of 259,000. The name New castle was given in the Norman times in 1080, which continues to exist till date. A significant element of Newcastles expansion came from the importation of coal from Northumberland. The major industries in the 19th century in the region were shipbuilding as well as heavy engineering. However, in the 20th century, there was a decline in these industries. At present, the chief employment is office and retail at a short distance from the city centre. The original bankrupt city centre dwellings providing working class housing are used for shipyards as well as other heavy industries.
