Monhmany Guesthouse

In amongst the houses in the centre of town, the rooms in this guesthouse are the most basic in Pakbeng. Situated in the upper floor of a real Lao home, rooms have little natural light and the sheets are not too clean (and have seen better days). The ceiling is low and although there are mosquito nets, the rooms have no fan. Bathrooms are shared, and to access them you have to go out the back and downstairs via a small balcony littered with old bicycles. There is a river view, but it's not a place to sit and appreciate. The downstairs area is on flat packed earth so shoes are required, and the household life goes on around you. Toilet and showers are separated, there are two cold bucket wash rooms, and two squat toilets. The whole place is grubby and really doesn’t make much of a first impression. It's suitable if you're looking for a real cultural experience, and some Lao family flavour, but otherwise, try elsewhere first.
