Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park offer the ultimate in wilderness cross country and Nordic skiing. If you want to escape the crowds, then explore the plateaus and varied terrain of this area, accessible only on foot. Although the area is popular among bush walkers during the summer months, only hardy souls venture up here during the winter. There are no chairlifts, shops or lavish ski resorts in Cradle Mountain - basically, you're on your own. Although a number of basic huts are spread throughout the area for the brave to rest their heads, most visitors choose to base themselves at the comfortable lodges found at the base area of Cradle Mountain and take day walks up into the mountains from here. The number of cross country runs here is limited only by your imagination and pioneering spirit. Lake St Clair National Park boasts huge areas of stunningly beautiful terrain to explore, while Cradle Mountain, the Du Can Range and Mount Rufus offer limitless opportunities for ski activities. Snow can fall at anytime of the year here and the remoteness of the location guarantees fresh powder. If you want to go skiing in Cradle Mountain, it is easily accessible by car and the base area is home to a couple of comfortable lodges complete with a restaurant and bar. This is pretty much all the après-ski you'll find here, as people overwhelmingly come here to get back to nature and escape the crowds. Tasmania's mountains witness snowfall throughout the year, even in the summer. Even so, this is no guarantee that there will be a decent cover, as snowfall can be very sporadic. The advantage of the year-round snowfall is that there are no premiums for chairlift tickets or resort access, only standard National Park fees apply. The drive here is wonderful, while shuttle and coach connections are also available.
