The city of Ipswich is situated 40 kilometres to the west of the Australian state of Queensland's capital, Brisbane on the Bremer River. The city has a population of 129000 persons (Census 2001). It is the site of the Royal Australian Air Force base Amberley, the largest operational air force base in Australia. It is the home to 1 and 6 Squadrons, flying the General Dynamics F-111 strike aircraft, as well as to 38 Squadron's Caribou aircraft. Ipswich is also home to a satellite campus of the University of Queensland and the annual Ipswich Cup horse races. Ipswich also has a Railway Museum to commerate the first trainline in Australia which was from Brisbane to Ipswich. Ipswich is the birthplace of many of Australia's great sportspeople. Former Kangaroo, Queensland, Brisbane and Ipswich rugby league player Allan Langer was born in Ipswich, along with his football playing brothers. The state and national rugby leauge representative Walters brothers (Kevin, Kerrod and Steve) were also born in Ipswich. Australian Test cricketer Craig McDermott was also born in Ipswich and attended, like the Walters brothers, Ipswich Grammar School. Suffolk's county capital was one of the very first Saxon towns in England, a thriving medi-eval centre of commerce and a major point of emigration to America. But while heavy investment jazzes up its lively waterfront marinas, in its centre beautiful timber-framed buildings moulder behind scruffy boards and ugly modern chain stores nudge medieval churches. The most beautifully preserved buildings, of which there are several humdingers, are occupied by private enterprises. That said the town has some beautiful parkland, a burgeoning cultural scene and great transport connections.
