Maroochydore is a town on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. Maroochydore contains a popular surf beach. The Maroochy River's southern bank forms a virtually unbroken stretch of parkland and picnic spots in the area. Maroochydore is also a major commercial area of the Sunshine Coast with most shopping precincts located in the central business district. It is home to the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre, the Sunshine Coast Airport, and the Sunshine Coast's major bus interchange for TransLink services on Sunshine Coast. Maroochydore is also a venue of major surf sport carnivals, and is a popular holiday point from which to travel the rest of Queensland. The name Maroochydore comes from the Yuggera language word 'Muru-kutchi', meaning red-bill: the name of the black swan, commonly seen in the area. Population is approx. 17,500. An oceanway encourages pedestrians and cyclists to move sustainably along the beaches. If you're asking around about Sunshine Coast surf spots, you'll likely hear Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba mentioned. It's a bit confusing, but these popular beaches, along with neighbouring Cotton Tree, make up the conglomeration of suburbs officially referred to as Maroochy. Each beach has its own style, but all feature a strip of cafes and shops lining a main street running parallel to the beach. This is the most developed patch of the Sunshine Coast and is becoming permanent residence to more and more Australians each year. The downside of all this migration is a growing suburban spread, but happily it's yet to turn to outright sprawl. Inland suburbs like Buderim still feature quiet roundabouts and shopfronts looking like they date from the 1950s. Book ahead if you arrive during the summer school holidays (Christmas through as late as the third week of January).
