Old French colonial architecture remains in Laos

Thakhek is a quiet town in south-central Laos on the Mekong River and facing Nakhon Phanom in Thailand. The city has many French colonial style official buildings, villas and shop-houses, but in poor condition. Two hours North of Savannakhet is Thakhek. There's one club there. It's pretty fun. In Thakhek you can eat and drink along the mekong river. There's riverside places setup there. If you head south, There's Wat Phu Champasak. In Thakhek they have a buddha cave. Some cave someone found filled with a ton of Buddha's. Guys are allowed to walk deep into the caves to see the Buddha's, girls aren't allowed in deep. Girls also have to wear a traditional lao skirt. It's maybe 10km from Thakhek. Thakhek has two markets, “Dalat Luk song” and “Dalata Luk Saam” aka (2km marketplace/3km marketplace), the 3km market place might be a bit better though. Semi-evergreen, mixed deciduous, bamboo and dipterocarp forest covering predominately limestone karst ranges with steep slopes, cliffs, bluffs and caves to 1500 m. Flat bottomed enclosed valleys ranging in size from a few hundred hectares to 40 square kilometers. Many of rivers flow through underground caves. The largest is the 7.5 km between Konglor and Natan village on the Nam Hinboun and is navigable by boat.
